Shortly after making his way to the attic at a residential fire, Chief Miller was overcome by smoke and collapsed. He was carried outside and resuscitation efforts were initiated but Chief Miller died a short time later. Chief Miller had served with the Richmond Fire Department for 40 years, with 25 years as chief. Ironically, his son Earl would die in a similar manner while fighting a fire 13 years later.
