Firefighter Williams was riding on the back step of Hose Wagon #2 when it collided with a car at the intersection of Pike Street and Woodlawn Place. He was thrown approximately thirty feet and died at the scene. The wagon was responding to a reported grass fire when the accident occurred. Fire Chief John Hurley was also seriously injured in the accident.
