His wife and eight-month old son
Deputy Koontz and Sergeant Jordan Buckley were both shot in an exchange of gunfire while they and other officers attempted to serve arrest and search warrants for drug related offenses at a mobile home in the 300 block of Chandler Street in Russiaville Indiana.
At approximately 12:30 A.M. (EST) Sunday morning, officers knocked on the door of the home and announced their presence, but there was no answer. When officers entered the home, they were fired upon by an occupant inside striking Deputy Koontz and Sergeant Buckley.
Officers were able to return gunfire and extract the wounded deputies from the residence and provide first aid. Deputy Koontz and Sergeant Buckley were then transported to Howard Regional Hospital where they were treated and stablized before being airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
After securing the the residence, S.W.A.T. units from Howard County, Kokomo and Indiana State Police attempted to make contact with the occupants inside, but were unsuccessful. After entering the home, they found the shooter dead inside.
Deputy Koontz succumbed to his injuries shortly after 11:00 A.M. following surgery.
