While returning from a patient transport to Lexington, EMT Watkins went to the rear compartment of the ambulance to sleep.
His partner was driving in thick fog when a coal truck pulled out in front of the ambulance causing the fatal collision. The coal truck driver had missed his exit and was using the emergency crossover to make an illegal u-turn. EMT Watkins was pinned in the ambulance and died from his injuries. His partner was severely injured.
The accident occurred at approximately 4:00 A.M.
