As Constable Stubblefield entered the proprietor stepped out from behind patrons and opened fire, striking him in the head. The deputies returned fire, severely wounding the man. The subject was charged with murder but acquitted at trial two hours later.

Constable Stubblefield had only served as constable for three months and was murdered only five hours before the expiration of his interim term.
