Lieutenant/EMT Jatczak died of an apparent heart attack Thursday evening after responding to a call. With his car in the shop and only living a short distance away, he ran to the fire station when the call went out. Upon completion of the call, he complained of not feeling well and returned home. A short time later, he collapsed in cardiac arrest.
Lieutenant/EMT Jatczak joined the fire service in 1979 and was a very well-known and respected instructor with many certifications. He had been a member of the Lake Station Fire Department for nine years and had previously served with IUPUI (Indiana University) Fire Protection as Deputy Chief; ArcelorMittal Steel Fire Department; College Park Fire Department (Maryland); Greenbelt Fire Department (Maryland); and others. He had a long and distinguished career of serving and training others who serve.
