Officer Leonard Clay was shot and killed when he interrupted a robbery in progress at a gas station near 25th and Locust Streets. He chased two suspects several blocks before being shot four times.
Both suspects were captured a few hours later. One of the suspects had been shot and wounded by Officer Clay. Ten days later that suspect hanged himself with a necktie in his jail cell.

I am not a police officer, nor have I held rank in the US military. However, since I have studied this particular case, I feel compelled to write a small memorial to the two officers of Anderson, IN who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our safety. First I begin with Patrolman Leonard Clay, who died in the line of duty on May 31st 1926 (memorial day)...the day we honor our fallen heros. It took 80 years for the city of Anderson to make a place in the police departments lobby for certain reasons unknown to me.
Now that we have those in place, I finally got to see and appreciate the two men who never knew that that day would be their last on patrol. So I make my memorial to the first Leonard Clay, and say thank you for protecting our city from the criminal element. It is the least that I can do to honor the memory of a young man who left behind his family for the safety of others.
