Deputy Blanton had been assigned to serve misdemeanor warrants on two men. As he encountered the men at a voting precinct in Quicksand, both men began firing at Deputy Blanton, striking him in the back and the abdomen. Despite being severely wounded, Deputy Blanton managed to shoot and kill one of the men and wounded the other.
Deputy Blanton was taken by train to Jackson to receive medical treatment but died later that day.
Deputy Blanton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I.
