Paramedic Ely suffered a back injury while moving a patient earlier in the year. He underwent treatment and eventual surgery. Days after the surgery, he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism that was attributed to the surgery.
Paramedic Ely had served in the Kentucky National Guard.
