Incident

Sheriff Cordell was shot and killed while he and two deputies attempted to affect an arrest. The suspect was wanted on charges of stealing a horse from a farm in Arkansas. During the arrest, the suspect pulled a revolver and began firing. Sheriff Cordell was able to return fire but was mortally wounded in the exchange. The suspect was also killed.
