Corporal Ben Cooper and Officer Jake Reed were dispatched to a report of a disturbance at the Northpark Crossing shopping center at approximately 1:30 p.m. Shortly after making contact with a suspect in the parking lot, shots were fired and both officers went down.
The suspect, who was already armed, took one of the officer's weapons and then fled in one of the police vehicles. A pursuit ensued. The suspect fired at other police vehicles during the pursuit. The pursuit ended in a crash and the suspect fled on foot.
A third officer located the suspect as he was attempting to steal another vehicle. The officer blocked the vehicle with his own, and more shots were fired. That third officer suffered a gunshot wound to the face.
Additional shots were fired by other officers and the suspect was shot and killed.
Corporal Cooper succumbed to his wounds later the same day. Officer Reed suffered 'non-survivable wounds' but was kept on life support until his organs could be harvested three days later.
