Patrolman Kidwell and his partner Sergeant Bobby Durham had just begun their shift when they performed a traffic stop on a vehicle that had ran a stop sign. As they approached the vehicle, Patrolman Kidwell was shot in the chest with a .357 revolver. Sergeant Durham returned fire, striking the subject as he fled. Patrolman Kidwell was transported to Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford where he died.
The suspect crashed his vehicle a short distance away. Three people stopped to help the subject following the crash. He then took them hostage and forced them to drive him to Rockcastle County where he let them out of the vehicle.
Officers later caught up with the vehicle on I-75. After a brief chase, they were able to stop the vehicle and shots were exchanged, striking the subject in the chest. He was transported to a local hospital, then to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and survived his injuries.
He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He was denied parole in 2003 and again in 2012.
