Incident

Sergeant Walter Artz was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance.

As officers attempted to calm the man down at the back door of the home the man suddenly began firing, fatally wounding Sergeant Artz. Officers returned fire and wounded the man, who then committed suicide.

I was in Union Hospital giving birth to my third child the night Officer Artz was brought in. My son was born at 7:02 p.m. The hospital was filled with policemen. It was told to us that an officer had been killed. It has been 27 years, and every year on my son's birthday we remember and give tribute to this officer. I do not know his family, but often wish I had contacted them to let them know that he is remembered.
