Trooper Pickard was assisting the Hodgenville Police Department in serving an arrest warrant for assault and menacing when he was shot and killed as he approached the front door of the suspect’s residence.

The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

In his honor, a five-mile stretch of KY 61 in LaRue County has been designated the “Trooper William F. Pickard Memorial Highway."
