Chief Elliott and a local mining company deputy were attempting to raid a still when Chief Elliott and the deputy were ambushed and shot. The deputy although wounded in the neck was able to get back to Louellen for assistance. Chief Elliott was carried out 1.5 miles before he could be transported to Harlan Hospital where he died two days later.
