Firefighter Crumbaugh was driving the chief's buggy responding to a fire when it collided with a wagon in front of a livery barn. Firefighter Crumbaugh was thrown from the buggy and a skull fracture and broken ribs. He was healing from broken ribs suffered in a separate incident a few weeks earlier.
Chief Ed Shauman was also seriously injured in the incident.

station, while on his way to a
fire on the south side of the city,
in the buggy of the fire chief, was
thrown from the vehicle to the
street when It struck a moving van
which protruded into the street.
The night was stormy and almost
complete darkness made progress
dangerous. Crumbaugh suffered a
fractured skull and died the day
following.
